I didn’t really had time to update in the last days, but I’ve got an good excuse: langkawi island has been amazing!
I took the ferry from Penang to Butterworth, drove with a bus (3$ for 1,5 hours) to alor setar, took another really crappy bus to kuala kedah and jumped from there on the ferry to langkawi. This route was half price compared to the direct ferry Penang-langkawi, but I’m not sure if it has been worth traveling the doubled amount of time!
Anyway, I met a nice Irish couple on alor setar and we drove with a really old bus. Doors closed? Naah. Seems like the floor just rusted away, but someone had the idea to just nail some old wood on the ground instead.. At least you had a nice view on the street through the 3 cm gaps in the ground… We haven’t been quite sure if we would arrive, especially because the room filled with smoke from the engine when the bus stood still!
But we made it! We took the 18 ringit ferry to langkawi and met over there Vincent, a really cool & chilled out guy! We shared the taxi to the backpackers region in langkawi and were desperately searching for accommodation, cause everything was already full! But fortunately we went into a small, Chinese like hotel that made us a special price on a 4 bed room! 15MR/night, that’s allright! We went out for dinner and found the „reggae bar“! It’s amazing, just a really nice bar straight on the beach… You can have a drink on the beach whilst enjoying the lights of the fisherboats and the chill-out music at once! And many other backpackers around.. Really reminded me to my time in Agnes water 🙂
Later on we went with some other ones to one love, a Malay-dominated club playing minimal/charts/reggae, so nice!
And I nearly forgot the best part! Langkawi is a tax-free island, no taxes on alcohol and everything, yeaaaaaah cheap cheap cheap!
We had to use the next day to mainly chill out on the beach, but still more then nice! We had to change hostels too, because the Irish wanted another room. So we ended up with a 2 person room for 22MR, really cool!
In the evening again the same routine, just that we visited Simba, another bar.
The next day we rented a typical Asian bike and drove around the island. We saw a really nice waterfall and went on the top of the second-highest Malaysian mountain! The route was just fun, especially with a semi-automatic bike!:D on the way back we had unfortunately a flat tire, I really expected that (bike was 10MR/person ~ 2,50€). So we had to push it to the next mechanic. My impression of Malays really changed that day, they didn’t bother at all when they drove past. If they would at least ignore us, but no, even better, they drove extra-slow besides us and just laughed! Fuckers! Not even giving directions!
As we made it to the mechanic he changed the tire (10MR only). Was hard enough to explain him what’s going on not knowing English!
As we finally arrived home we had some food and went again to the reggaebar! We even swore ourselves to not drink alkohol today and we still had loads of fun, just can’t say that about sleep!;)
Langkawi was definately a really nice island! But totally different to the rest of Malaysia… Some streets reminded me even more to Mallorca then Asia!
The next day Vincent even drove me to the ferry, from where I made my way to Hat Yoi, Thailand. I met a friendly English guy who gave me some informations about Thailand! But I really didn’t want to know why he is resident here in Thailand, especially because it was a place that is known for its Thai-whores… Weird weird!
